ASE Technician Certification
The independent, non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) was founded in 1972 with a single mission: to improve the quality of automotive service and repair through the voluntary testing and certification of automotive technicians. ASE has emerged as the only automotive certification program that is both industry-wide and national in scope. ASE, the recognized leader in automotive technician testing and certification has been endorsed by forty professional associations and trade groups.
There are 8 areas of certification that pertain to an auto technician who is working on cars and light trucks:
Engine Repair
- Automatic Transmission/Transaxle
- Manual Drive Train and Axles
- Suspension and Steering
- Brakes
- Electrical/Electronic Systems
- Heating and Air Conditioning
- Engine Performance
If a technician is certified in all 8 areas, he is designated as an ASE Certified Master Technician and certified to work on all areas of a vehicle. Being certified in one or two areas in no way indicates you are qualified to work on all areas of a vehicle.
The really tough ASE test is the Advanced Engine Performance Test. This test goes over and above the Master Technician Certification and addresses the most complicated high tech, often electronic systems on a vehicle. As of June 2001 there were only 45,161 technicians in the entire country with ASE Advanced Engine Performance Certification.

ASE Blue Seal of Excellence Program
This certification is for the repair establishment and is based on having at least 75% of the shop’s technicians ASE certified. A shop must also have at least one technician certified in each area of service offered. This certifies that we are qualified to work on all types of car and light truck repairs.
Please check out the ASE web site for additional information on their programs.
